TEACHING EXPERIENCE

September 1971 – present: Geology instructor, Whatcom Community College, Bellingham, Washington. Teach courses including Earth Science, Introduction to Geology, Physical Geology, Natural Disasters,  Meteorology,   Geology of America's National Parklands, Oceanography, Environmental Geology, Glacial Geology, and Volcanology. Also have taught physical education courses including Cross Country Skiing, Alpine Travel, and Mountaineering. Team taught a sequence in Interdisciplinary Studies. Taught an Honors Seminar. Active in college governance and   was on steering committees including Writing Across the Curriculum and Honors Program Advisory Committee. Active in Alternative Learning including serving frequently as a faculty mentor for student learning contracts.
September 1970 – June 1972 Teaching assistant, Geology Department, Western Washington State College. Taught laboratory courses in Physical Geology, Introductory Geology, and Geomorphology.

RECENT PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

August, 2001 - Volunteer on a Passports in Time project to restore the Green Mountain Lookout, Darrington District, Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.
Fall 1988 – present: Teach community education courses for Whatcom Community College on Volcanoes and Earthquakes; Visiting Southwestern Deserts; Navigation; Hawaii Off the Beaten Path; Spring Walks, Hikes, and Trail Runs in Whatcom County; Hiking in the North Cascades.
1995 – present: Teach courses on Glaciers and Volcanoes and Glaciers during summers for Elderhostel.
September 1990, 1992, 1993:  Led field trips for the public on Geologic Hazards of North Cascades (U.S. Forest Service Program, Heather Meadows, Whatcom County, Washington).
August 1988-90 National Wildlife Federation Summit, Bellingham, Washington. Taught class in "Geology of the North Cascades" and led field trips for groups of up to 45 adults.
July 1989 Led field course in Washington, Oregon, and California for Volcanology course.
December, 2001: Led 8-day field trip to Hawaii for some of the graduates of the Volcanoes class to see Kilauea and other volcanic features.
1992 (Eugene), 1996(Portland), 2000(Vancouver, B.C.), 2004(Seattle), 2007(Bellingham): Attended Cordilleran Section Annual Meeting of Geological Society of America.
1973 to 2003:  Professional climbing guide during summer season.
